Gathering contains the diary (1836 Jan. 1-25) of Anna Caroline Lesesne, and a loose sheet of paper containing questions for a bible lesson. Entries concern events and Lesesne's activities in Charleston, South Carolina including the rebuilding of St. Philip's Church after the 1835 fire, sermons and Sunday school lessons, meetings of the Society for the Advancement of Christianity in South Carolina, prayer, meetings of the Temperance Society, Mr. Hite's [a well-known miniaturist] painting her sister Deas' [Mary] portrait, a visit to the Hall of Industry to see a cotton machine, soldiers at the Citadel preparing for a military expedition to Florida, a lecture at the Apprentices' Library Society, problems with her teeth, long walks, reading, playing the piano, visits to and from friends.
